Why Trench Safety Is Not Optional

Trench collapses are the deadliest hazard in earthwork, so cuts five feet deep and greater always get a protective system under OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart P. Depending on the soil and depth, that means a steel trench box, hydraulic shoring, or benching and sloping laid back to the angle the soil allows. A competent person inspects the excavation daily before anyone enters it.

We file the free 811 locate at least two business days ahead so marked gas, water, and electric lines stay intact, then set the protective system, dig to line and grade, and bed and backfill in compacted lifts. Where the site disturbs one acre or more, we keep silt fence and inlet protection maintained under the NPDES permit.
